Spanish Immersion Teacher: 2021-22

This position is 30 hours per week during the school year. 


Heartwood Grove School, a small arts-focused language immersion school in Richmond, is seeking an immersion teacher who can teach Spanish, social studies and other humanities and arts completely in the target language to a K-1 class, as well as a 4th grade class with near native ability.  This class read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory last year in Spanish.


Salary $26 per hour plus two weeks paid holiday pay.  Partial relocation expenses paid. 


Talents in the arts, such as music, classical dance, and/or visual arts, a bonus.  

Ability to teach with minimal technology essential.  Ability in French would be a plus.  Students take classes in both Spanish and French.


We are a small private school with multi-age/grade classes. The ideal candidate will possess and/or demonstrate the following:

  • Native speaker or near-native proficiency, with experience living in a Spanish or a Spanish-speaking country and experience working with children and pre-teens
  • Legal right to work in the United States
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and thorough knowledge and enthusiasm for hands-on, experiential immersion methods
  • Immersion teaching experience preferred
  • Ability to teach elementary math in Spanish
  • Familiarity with traditional, project-based, as well as alternative teaching methods (Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Concordia Language Village methods, etc.)
  • Ability to work in a multi-age/multi-level grade classroom incorporating projects, the arts, and games into the classroom
  • Willingness to cooperate with other teachers, staff, and parents; to share classrooms; to work with teachers for occasional blended lessons.
  • Special skills or interest in any of the following is a plus but not essential: art, crafts, reading music, singing, classical dance, yoga, knitting or weaving, gardening,cooking, or simple and safe woodworking.
  • Good communication skills and willingness to occasionally present at assemblies.
  • Ability to work with small groups as well as one-on-one with students.


Physical Requirements and Disclaimer: Classrooms are on the second floor with stair-only access.

Work is performed in a school setting and requires moderate physical movement and energy to achieve educational goals. Frequent walking, standing, climbing stairs, sitting on the floor, performing physical activities with students, and occasional lifting up to 20 pounds may be required.


We are very flexible, allowing teachers to bring their own artistic skills, project ideas, and creativity to the curriculum. We offer partial remission for children of faculty.


Richmond, VA has nice parks, museums, theater, ballet, symphonies, universities, etc., without the traffic or high cost of living of larger cities.
